Face Scarves

Many women in countries across South East Asia can often be seen wearing scarves or handkerchiefs across their mouth and nose. However, this isn’t anything to do with pollution, it is actually to protect the skin from the sun, wind and rain.

In this region, culture dictates that a very pale skin colour is seen as a sin of beauty, so the scarf is designed to keep the skin as white as possible.
